He brings a unique perspective to his job as a prosthetist as he previously worked as a professional sculptor. In his job, Dwight works with kids born with congenital hand differences and he builds terminal devices that allow them to participate in the activities that are meaningful to them.

WFAA Honors Scottish Rite Hospital’s Don Cummings

On April 5, 2019, several Scottish Rite Hospital staff members gathered before the break of dawn at the WFAA studio for a “Party on the Plaza” to celebrate a segment that was aired live that morning. The hospital’s Director of Prosthetics Don Cummings had no idea the story was actually about him.

Don, who has been at the hospital since 1987, was honored as WFAA Daybreak’s Rise and Shiner — an honor given to those dedicated to changing lives for the better through their work. Don was nominated by his peers and former patients at Scottish Rite Hospital, and the staff that showed up early Friday morning truly showed their support for Don and his family.

DALLAS — It’s round two for 16-year-old Cody and some of the 13 other teens headed to Winter Park, Colorado!

Every year, American Airlines, Saint Bernard, and other sponsors team up to send Scottish Rite patients on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. And for Cody, who is considered a ski-trip vet, is taking his new computerized legs along for the journey.

“The first time I went I  got to try skiing for the first time that was my first time ever skiing or getting to do a winter sport,” Cody said. “I think I’ll have more independence on walking in the snow and able to navigate the slick surfaces.”

NewsFix caught up with the rest of the crew for their send-off filled with balloons, treats, and goodbye hugs.

Amputee Ski Trip Spotlight: Alfonso, age 15 of Bedford

Alfonso, age 15 of Bedford, has been treated for hand differences and prosthetic needs at Scottish Rite Hospital since he was five years old. Alfonso dreams of one day becoming an English teacher and his favorite book is Perks of Being a Wallflower. His prosthetist Kara Davis describes him as a “very fun-loving, active kid” and his adventurous spirit is infectious to all who meet him. Alfonso went on the Amputee Ski Trip for the first time in 2017 and is looking forward to seeing friends he made on last year’s trip and making new friends.

About the Annual Amputee Ski Trip

February 2018 will mark the 37th anniversary of the annual Amputee Ski Trip, held each year at the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. Fourteen teenage patients with limb differences receive practical recreational therapy, while also having the opportunity to grow, build confidence and bond with others similar to them.
